Foster Alexandre

With his unique approach to music-making, Alexandre Foster has convinced critics as well as audiences all over the world. He has been heard in some of the most prestigious halls in Europe (Casa da Musica Porto, Herkulesaal München, Frauenkirche Dresden, Stadtcasino Basel, KKL Luzern).

Among his teachers were David Ellis, Thomas Demenga, Conradin Brotbek, Rainer Schmidt, Anton Kernjak, Rita Wagner and Ferenc Rados. Having always been fascinated by historically-informed performance practice, he subsequently decided to study baroque cello at the renowned Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, where in 2014 he obtained a Master of Arts in Early Music under the tutelage of Christophe Coin.

A devoted chamber musician, Alexandre Foster is a founding-member of the Calvino Trio, with whom he has played all over the world. The ensemble was awarded the First Prize “Norbert Schenkel” in 2015 at the Jeunesse Musicale Competition (Switzerland) and in 2016 the First Prize “Orpheus” at the Swiss Chamber Music Competition. He is also the cellist of the baroque ensemble Le-je-ne-scay-quoy. In 2010, he was recognised for the world premiere of the Hermann Keller sonata, recorded live by SWR 2 Radio (Germany).

In addition to his career as a performer, he is also in demand as a pedagogue. For the last three years he has taught at the Hochschule für Musik Stuttgart and as Assistant to Conradin Brotbek at the Hochschule der Künste Bern. From this year, he is also on the sta at the Academia Sighisoara in Romania.
